Recognising and avoiding scams

Recent scams

There are various scam emails circulating using our Southern Cross Health Insurance branding. These are not from Southern Cross and our data has not been compromised. These scams are broad-ranging and target email addresses that are publicly accessible.

Unfortunately, Southern Cross is just one of many organisations across Aotearoa New Zealand being targeted by people mis-using trusted branding on scams.

If you see one, don’t click any links, provide any information, or reply to the sender. You can simply delete the message.

Need help recognising a scam? Check these things before replying, clicking a link, or sharing your information.

What to do if you’ve received a scam message that looks or sounds like it’s from Southern Cross

  • Please do not click any links, provide any information, or reply to the sender. You can simply delete the message.
  • You may choose to report to us any Southern Cross looking emails or texts that you think are suspicious or spam below.
  • If you’ve been contacted by telephone, are being asked for information you feel uncomfortable providing, and you feel unsure the person you’re speaking with is from Southern Cross, then please hang up. If you want to check if Southern Cross was contacting you, then call us back on 0800 800 181 or +64 9 979 9212. We’re here to help Mon-Thu 8:00am – 5:00pm, Fri 9:00am – 4:30pm.

What to do if you’ve been scammed

  • If you think or know that you’ve been scammed for money, then report it to your bank as quickly as possible.
  • If you’ve shared an account password, then change that password to something different with 16 characters or more as quickly as possible (longer passwords are more difficult for others to crack).
  • You can also report scams to Netsafe / freephone: 0508 638 723 (NZ only). Netsafe will get back to you with advice and may also pass your report to another agency, such as the police or Consumer Protection.
